The Story of Deer Park Farm

You will find Deer Park Farm LLC nestled in the rolling hills of a little area right outside the town limits of Floyd Va. Donald “Swede” McBroom, purchased this property in 2010 with the intention of building a new house and meditation hall and eventually a full retreat center to compliment his practice of meditation. Shanti, the meditation hall, and first part of then retreat complex, was finished and opened in 2013, providing space for spiritual groups to practice.

After focusing on the house and Shanti being complete, Swede retired from a career of custom woodworking and began to concentrate on the property and the growing potential of the land. To start, tilling a garden space and fencing to keep the critters a little at bay. Later, a greenhouse and garden shed to help with the task. The idea was to grow good clean food for the table and to can pickles and sauerkraut for Christmas baskets and presents. He eventually hired a garden helper who had other recipes and the occasional canning session developed into canning goods to sell at farmers’ market.

For almost five years they cooked in Swede’s kitchen and created new and delicious products to sell. From there the attention and demand grew and the farm took on a life of its own.

Three years ago, we built a complete commercial kitchen, as the work load became much too much for the home one. With the addition of three more 30’ X 50’ greenhouses and doubling our field space, we are beginning to keep up with the demands of full time production. With our master chef and wonderful kitchen staff, inventory and new products continue to grow. Add to that our marketing and inventory manager, the team is strong.

Our farm manager and crew now have the four greenhouses here at the farm and two other larger greenhouses close by. This next year should produce bumper crops all around, enough to keep the kitchen in produce for most of the year. You can’t get much fresher than that.

We now have over 20 products certified that are available in stores in Floyd, Franklin Co., Roanoke, Salem and Montgomery Co.

We do farmers markets in Roanoke, Salem and Christiansburg during the warmer seasons. Sauerkraut, Pickles, Ravioli, Jams, Jellies, Marinara, Hot Sauces and Salsa’s are some of our fare. No preservatives or colorings and all natural ingredients make our foods both delicious and healthy.
